Anointing of the Sick
When the need arises for the Anointing of the Sick or Last Rites, please call the Parish Office at 763-497-2474, Ext 1, to make arrangements.
Through the apostle James, Jesus said: “Are there people who are sick among you? Let them send for a priest who will pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord……” James 5:13
In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.
The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.
When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults
The Anointing of the Sick is for:
~ those who are in grave danger of death
~ those whose health is impaired due to advanced age
~ those who are seriously ill (physically or emotionally)
~ those who are chronically ill (example: heart disease, asthma, arthritis...)
~ those who are having a serious surgery or operation and are receiving general anesthesia
~ children who are impaired due to health conditions
~ expectant mothers in danger of miscarriage
The faithful should encourage those who are ill to receive this sacrament.
Holy Orders
If you are interested in learning more about the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the ordained ministry of Priesthood or Deaconate, please contact our Pastor, Fr. Joseph Zabinski, and be sure to check out the Vocations website for our Archdiocese where you will find event opportunities, a Q & A about the Priesthood and helpful guidance to discernment questions, such as "Am I called?".
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has a minor seminary, St. John Vianney College Seminary, and a major seminary, St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity. Both are located at the University of St. Thomas Campus in St. Paul were preparation for Priesthood and as well where Deaconate formation takes place.
Several years of study, preparation, and discernment takes place prior to receiving the Sacrament of Holy Orders and becoming an Ordained Minister as a Priest or Deacon in the Catholic Church.
Each year, typically in May, an Ordination Mass with the Rite of Priesthood takes place at the Cathedral of St. Paul as well as an Ordination Mass with the Rite of Deaconate. All the faithful are encouraged to attend these Ordination Masses.
